What You’ll Need To Make Homemade Pasta Sauce

  • extra virgin olive oil– Use a good quality olive oil for best tasting results. Extra virgin has the best results.
  • garlic– When time permits, I like to use fresh garlic cloves and mince them myself. If needed, you can use the minced garlic that you can get in jars in the produce section of many grocery stores.
  • onion– I use white onion for the recipe.
  • crushed tomatoes– Get good quality crushed tomatoes as this is the main ingredient for the tomato sauce. See my suggestions below.
  • Kosher salt- In all of my cooking, I use kosher salt. It’s a course salt found near the table salt at the grocery store.
  • Freshly ground black pepper– For best tasting results use pepper that’s been freshly crushed from a pepper mill.
  • red pepper flakes– Red pepper flakes give a little heat to the sauce, just a touch.
  • dried and or fresh basil– I like to add dried basil and fresh basil to my pasta sauce.

The Best Canned Tomatoes To Use For Pasta Sauce

I like this brand, Cento and also San Marzano. Muir Glen is also a great choice.

How To Serve

Serve homemade pasta sauce with your favorite cooked pasta noodles. Serve with garlic bread and side salad if desired.

What Kind of Pasta Should I Use?

There are countless shapes of pasta that work great with this sauce. I really like penne and rotini, but keep in mind, you can use whatever shaped pasta you’d like. Add some browned Italian Sausage for a heartier pasta dinner. Hope you enjoy!

How To Store Leftovers

Store any leftover pasta sauce/pasta in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.
