Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe

A few weeks ago I was in NYC for literally less than 24 hours and one of the only things I was able to squeeze in other than what I was there for was a visit to Serendipity for one of my favorite treats…..the Frozen Hot Chocolate. It is massive, chocolaty and perfectly ice-y.

When I got back home I told the boys all about the treat I had and said I would re-create our own version! So…..I got to work 🙂

How to Make Frozen Hot Chocolate

Here is your line up. Please add one more hot chocolate to the picture. I ended up using 5 packets. Use your favorite brand of hot chocolate mix. I used the Trader Joe’s brand of cocoa. This literally takes 5 minutes to make, not kidding.

I had my little guy hop on the counter and help whip the cream and sugar. Whip it until perfectly creamy.

Like so 🙂

Let’s start with the milk. Pour it right into the blender. PS…..LOVE my Blendtec!

Cocoa time!

Give it a good blend!

Add the ice and crush it up!

I found the perfect consistency and was in love 🙂

See those little ice crystals?! Those are the best part.

Time for the sweet cream and chocolate!

I used mini chocolate chips, but you can used shaved chocolate that looks more authentic to the original 🙂

Ahhhh, wait until you try this! Love!

A few boys I know enjoyed the treat 🙂

It was so fun bringing a little bit of NYC to my stinkers 🙂

I was in NYC for 3 days, and although Serendipity was on my list, my family didn’t make it. So glad to find your recipe so I can make it at home.

I would have to add espresso to this!!! Then you would have a frozen mocha,
    Sounds delicious

your recipe sounds delicious but the Frozen Hot chocolate at Serendipity does not have frozen pieces of ice in it. It’s more creamy, smooth & thick.

You know, who says we can’t have hot chocolate in the summertime? Love Serendipity, and so glad to have this recipe. 🙂

Thanks for the inspiration! It’s yummy! I made a lower cal version with 1/2 and 1/2 (didn’t whip up but that was okay for me) stevia and 2% milk. I used Stevens dark chocolate mint hot cocoa and was delighted with a 361 calorie treat. Since I’m watching my calorie intake it was a great dessert. A little shaved Ikea dark chocolate and yum!

So yummy. Next time I would save myself the hassle and purchase premade whipped cream, and I would use 1% milk that I always have, I don’t think it would make much of a difference. I also used Tim hortons hot chocolate and just weighed out 5.25 oz, instead of 5 pre packed packages.

Whoops!!! Lol now I see servings on the typed recipe. Sorry! Thanks.

Hi. Thank you for sharing this recipe. Looks great! I really want to serve for christmas but I was wondering how many will this recipe serve? It looks like you used some smaller serving cups but again how many will it serve?
Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

    I love Serendipity.It is such a neat place.Everything there is good.They have
fabulous hamburgers too.I have always wondered how to make frozen hot choclate. Now you have given me the answer. Will be going back on a trip in the Spring. You can be sure I will be making a stop there.Whats so neat is it is so close to Bloomingdales.

Gosh, I am a New Yorker, and I can never snag a table during the holiday season. I can’t wait to try your version, as I know that it is so delicious.

  11. Donna McBroom-Theriot

I will definitely be trying your version. I also have the Serendipity cookbooks. I say the same thing – a trip to NYC without stopping in at Serendipity for their frozen hot chocolate would just not be a trip to NYC. Also, Levaine Bakery for a chocolate chocolate chip cookie! Great site. Loving the recipes.

oh Jenny! Frozen hot chocolate?!? I am starting to wonder what else I’m missing out on by not visiting big cities more often! Looks great!

Thank you for the wonderful recipe! Made an individual serving for myself today, and I loved it! (and my mom may have stole a few bites) I went a little less on the hot chocolate packets, but added Hershey’s chocolate syrup, and it was delicious.

Haven’t been to Serendipity but this looks amazing! I wondered (being a poor college student with no fancy blender) is it possible to use my small food processor to crush the ice and then blend everything together in the blender? My blender says it can crush ice but I’ve already proven the only thing it can “crush” are ice cream and bananas!

    1. Jenny

      Hi Lorry,
It doesn’t hurt to try! I haven’t tried it in the food processor but give it a whirl!

Always wanted to try frozen hot cocoa as I saw it once on Oprah… never made until today when I saw your recipe.. I used 1% milk and no choc. chips but it was still DELICIOUS! Kids LOVED it too!! I used my favorite hot cocoa (only kind I like as I grew up on it, SWISS MISS)…. and it was DELICIOUS! (I’m not a chocolate fan, but this was great!)….100 times better than hot cocoa and my new turn to quick dessert! Even good for entertaining friends!! Thank you and I LOVE Your site!! 🙂

This sounds absolutely delicious! I made Kahlua whipped cream yesterday and have a bit left, would be perfect to spoon right on top of this cold hot chocolate treat. Thanks!

It’s backward day at our house this weekend – and we started off the morning with this delicious chocolate treat! Hopefully this will get the boys basketball mojo going today! Yum! Need to find this place called Trader Joe’s that I hear so much about – none in our area. Tonight – Mozzarella stuffed meatballs! Thanks again for sharing!

Mmm. I have never been to Serendipity..heard all about it though. These little frozen Hot Chocolates sound amazing!

  21. Erin

Funny story…I decided I wanted to try your last recipe with the giant Hershey kiss. Note to self: READ the recipe before buying ingredients. I bought 1 GIANT HERSHEY KISS, meaning the 7 oz because that’s what I thought yours looked like in the picture. I’m considering trying the recipe on one GIANT cookie 🙂

  22. Hannah

I’m putting this on my summer to-do list. This will be the ultimate way to enjoy hot chocolate in hot weather!

  23. Memoria
