What You’ll Need
Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make homemade pancakes at home. See the recipe card located at the bottom of the post for full instructions.
- All-Purpose Flour– Flour is the main dry ingredients for the pancakes.
- Quick Oats– I love the texture the oats give the pancakes.
- Baking Soda– Baking soda helps the pancakes rise during cooking.
- Salt– I use kosher salt or sea salt in my baking and cooking.
- Walnuts– The walnuts are optional, but add a nice nutty flavor and texture.
- Buttermilk– No substitutions for the buttermilk. It is needed as part of the wet ingredients.
- Egg– I use large eggs in all of my cooking and baking for consistency.
- Vanilla– For best tasting results use pure vanilla.
- Prepared Caramel Sauce– I like the Trader Joe’s Salted Caramel Sauce if you can find it near you.
How To Make Buttermilk Pancakes
Heat Skillet. Place a medium sized non-stick skillet over medium heat.
Dry Ingredients. Place flour, oats, baking soda, salt and walnuts into a large mixing bowl. Stir to combine.
Wet Ingredients. Slowly pour in and stir buttermilk, egg and vanilla, mixing to combine.
Cook Pancakes. Spoon about 1/4 cup batter into hot skillet, swirling to make round. Cook until browned then flip to brown other side. Remove and stack onto plate. Continue finishing pancakes until batter is gone.
Arrange Bananas and Serve. To serve, layer sliced bananas around edges of each pancake and drizzle with warm caramel sauce.
Caramel Sauce. Use your favorite caramel sauce and drizzle over top of the pancakes.
Tips For Making The Best Pancakes
- Rest Batter. Mix lightly and give batter a rest! Mix pancakes minimally to avoid forming toughening gluten. There are a few ways to ensure that you mix pancake batter well without over mixing it. Have all your ingredients at room temperature. Mix cold buttermilk and eggs with melted butter and you get clumps of butter—not the end of the world, but not optimal for even distribution.
- Make Sure Skillet Is Hot. Test a small pancake in the hot skillet/griddle to make sure temperature is good. No need to waste a full size pancake.
- Cook Until Bubbles Form. Cook until bubbles cover the surface; flip before they all break.
How To Serve
Serve these dessert pancakes at your next brunch or Holiday party. They’re always a huge success.
How To Store Leftovers
Store leftover pancakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Reheating Instructions
To reheat pancakes, place onto a heat proof plate loosely covered for 60-75 seconds, or until hot.
