Honey Whole Wheat Pizza Dough Recipe by Picky Palate

You are in for such a treat with my Honey Whole Wheat Pizza Dough recipe! I have been making pizza for a couple weeks now and cannot stop! I used to stock up on store-bought dough from Trader Joe’s like it was going out of style. I still love it, but there’s something about making your own pizza dough in your kitchen that can’t be beat!

My recipe could not be more simple to prepare. No waiting for the dough to rise, it’s literally done in about 15 minutes.

So excited for you to make your own dough for your family, not only does it taste incredible, your house smells like a dream too!

Form dough into a round ball. You can bake it at this point, cut it into fourths for individual pizzas, or refrigerate in a Ziploc bag.

Honey Whole Wheat Pizza Dough

My boys love making their own pizzas, so I usually cut this dough into fourths and store in the refrigerator or freezer. I put one of these baggies into the fridge and baked it after 1 week and it worked great.

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups Gold Medal Flour's White Whole Wheat Flour
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Lawry's Garlic salt

Instructions

  • Place warm water, yeast and sugar into bowl of stand mixer. Make sure dough hook is attached to mixer. Gently stir water, yeast and sugar and let sit for 10 minutes.

  • With floured hands, transfer dough to a floured countertop. Knead with hands 3 or 4 times then roll into a ball. At this point you can refrigerate for 3 days, freeze up to 1 month or roll and bake now.
  • When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. and roll dough into a 12 inch round. Spread with sauce and toppings of choice. Bake for 16-20 minutes until crust is baked through. Remove and let cool for 5 minutes before slicing.
  • Note: You can cut the dough into fourths and make four individual size pizzas as well. Bake for 12-16 minutes for the smaller pizzas. Dough can be frozen for 4 weeks as well.

  1. What gorgeous dough! I love the opening shot of you, too ๐Ÿ™‚ Gosh, you are so polished & put together, Jenny! Whoa. I am lucky if my hair is even fairly recently washed, let alone heels and a skirt ๐Ÿ™‚

I love making my own pizza dough too. So much better & cheaper than storebought! Pinned

    1. Averie! I am cracking up because it sure looks like I was put together, but I had been to the gym that morning, no make-up on and dirty hair. Funny how a dress and heels can make the picute “look.” Lol! xo

  2. You had me at ready in 15 minutes!! I can’t wait to try your recipe. I love that it has honey in it and can be refrigerated for later use. My family will love this ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Ohmygosh I am IN LOVE with that first photo! Definitely agree with Averie,as I am sitting here in my pjs and not washed hair!
I am also diggin the green KitchenAid…I wish mine was a fun color!
This pizza dough looks dynamite, and I love that it is whole wheat! Homemade pizza dough is always the way to go!

    1. Thank you Taylor. I had to laugh at yours and Averie’s comments because I had no make-up on, dirty hair and had not had a shower for the day, lol! Looks can be be deceiving ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for your comment ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I’ve never had much luck with making pizza dough, but yours sounds so easy and I love that it’s ready in 10 minutes. Maybe I’ll give it another go because I really want to make my own dough. Love your green Kitchen Aid. Mine is the plain white.

  5. Karen

Loved the picture with your shoes in the background. This looks like a very good recipe and look forward to making it. Thank you so much. Truly enjoy your blog.

  6. Thea

This looks delicious and I can’t wait to try it!! I’ve had great luck with Ina Garten’s pizza dough recipe too, love T.J.’s, but it puts their dough to shame!

  7. Your skirt and shoes are the cutest! Love that first photo!!

And I mean the pizza dough?!? Yum!! Sound and looks so good! Homemade pizza is the best!

  8. First, like the others, I loved the photo! THe heels and skirt definitely upscaled the shot! Never give your secrets away … dirty hair DONT CARE ๐Ÿ™‚

Second, love the recipe, and I will try it. I’ve failed, miserably, at making pizza dough. I’ve used ALL of the “best” recipes, and I just suck at it. However, no one really laid out the steps like you do. That may be the key. I’ll try it in a few weeks when the family is over and see.

I’m curious about storage. You mentioned that it lasts in the fridge a week. Is that the average? What about the freezer?

    Cheers

    1. I only tested the dough for a week in the fridge but it may last longer. You should probably be good for a month in the freezer. I put one in the freezer, took it out a couple of days later, baked it about 4 days later and it was fine. Good luck!

  9. Jackie

Hi! I have a question, I’ve only used regular whole wheat flour for baking and cooking. Do you find white whole wheat flour better? Is it a different consistency or is it just white as opposed to brown? Thanks!

  10. Emma Budraitis

Would using best flour change this recipe? And if I wanted to make twice as much should I double all the ingredients or make two separate batches.

  11. Tiffany

This was so easy to make. My husband was happy he didn’t have to wait 2 hours for the dough to rise. And I was happy it was whole wheat. Definitely a great pizza dough recipe.

  12. Ashlie

Has anyone else tried to make the dough yet? I tried it. Not sure what I did wrong but its too crumbly. Not sure how to fix it…Will have to try again later. Maybe too much flour in mine?

  13. Vera

Hey! When you bake your pizza do you use a pizza stone, just a regular baking sheet?? Just wondering which works the best.

  14. Megan

I made this tonight (and I did it on a baking sheet that I sprayed with olive oil spray first) and it came out fabulous! My 11 month old devoured it. She kept eating and eating; I was worried she’d end up with a tummyache from overfilling her little belly! This was incredibly easy and the first time I used my dough hook since I got my stand mixer 4 years ago!

    big thumbs up ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Thea

Darn went to the store knowing I needed whole wheat for this recipe, bought whole wheat not WHITE whole wheat. Have you tried this recipe with whole wheat? I have the Breville pizza maker, and love it, can’t wait to try this dough with it!

  16. kevin

made this tonight and it was horrible! Made it according to your recipe exactly. Does the dough need to rise before using it? I’ve been looking for a CO pizza dough. I am just wondering what I did wrong!

  17. Michelle

Made your pizza dough for our Friday night pizza night. It’s a winner, I’ll be using this recipe from now on. Thanks for posting it.

  18. Stacy

Just made this for dinner tonight!! Super easy to make and very YUMMY!!!! Will definitely be making this again!!

  19. Christy

I tried this pizza crust for the first time this weekend, it was amazing! The texture and consistency of the crust are great, but the flavor is what makes it better than any pizza crust recipe I have ever tried, homemade or otherwise.

Thanks for posting such a great and healthy recipe!!
