Start with 1 Cup chocolate chips. I used semi-sweet.

How To Make Magic Shell

  1. Place chocolate in heat proof bowl and microwave until melted, about 60-75 seconds depending on your microwave. Stir until creamy then drizzle in vegetable oil until well combined, shiny and smooth. Drizzle over ice cream, wait about 60 seconds for sauce to harden and enjoy your homemade magic shell. Place leftover sauce in airtight container and keep room temperature for 2 days. Microwave for 30 seconds before using again.

  3. Angie @ Big Bear's Wife

I’ve seen homemade magic shell made with Coconut oil but never Vegetable oil. Had I known I could use that I could have been making this for years! Love the post!

  4. Liz

um…crazy question…what kind of ice cream is that?! It looks divine! (or maybe its just the fact that Im pregnant and everything looks good?!) Either way, those flecks of vanilla in there are making my mouth water!

  5. Erin @ Dinners, Dishes, and Desserts

I like that this uses veggie oil. I have done it with coconut oil before, and you get a very coconut flavor. Not that, that is bad, but when you want chocolate you want chocolate!

I so love being able to print out your recipes. Thanks so much for sharing. My grandchildren will love the Magic Chocolate on their ice cream.

  7. DrDug

My grandma has made this for years from breaking off chunks of a 10 pounds Ghirardelli chocolate bar. Except she always used mineral oil. Guess she wants to keep things running smoothly. 🙂

  8. Karen @ Sugartown Sweets

Oh Oh Oh! I feel like the kid who finally knows the answer to the big question! This is so cool! Can’t wait to try this..and with peanut butter chips too! Thanks for the fun recipe. 🙂

  9. Kim B.

THAT is genius!! I’ve had to resort to throwing vanilla ice cream in the blender with Ovaltine to “chocolatize” it since my boys won’t eat plain vanilla ice cream. Since I ALWAYS have the big ole’ Costco bag of choc chips on hand this will be a HIT with them 🙂

  10. Nikki @Pennies on a Platter

So funny! I just bought coconut oil just to try this recipe, and didn’t realize I could just use veggie oil. Score!! 🙂

  11. Melissa

  12. Ashley

I use this recipe at Christmastime to make chocolate-peanut brittle. Once you have stirred your oil in, add 1-2 cups peanuts and stir, then spread onto a cookie sheet covered in wax paper. Refrigerate until firm, then break apart. Yummmm. Love your blog!

Love this, my kids will be excited! By the way, where did you get the coral table cloth that the dish is on?? Love it!

  14. Tracey

I love how simple this is. Not sure who will be happier–my husband or my kids. 🙂 Thanks.

try using coconut oil for a “healthier” spin. I also take about a 1/3 cup of chips and 2 T. of peanut butter. super yummy

  16. Minnie(@thelady8home)

That looks so fabulous and sounds not that difficult to make either. Thank you so much for sharing. 😀

  17. Frugal Faye

Hey Jenny! I tried your cookie from the previous post and it was soooo yummy, I told all my friends about your blog. The photography on here is so fun…love the coral and all the background textures in this one.

  18. aimee

Vegetable oil huh? Seems cheaper than my coconut oil version, but I wonder if the taste is as good?

  19. MegT

Does this keep well “if” there are leftovers? My husband is going to flip! This is his fav topping.

  20. Annamaria

This looks so easy. Would it work with olive oil too? That’s the only thing I keep in the house.

  21. Madeleine

Thanks for posting this recipe! I’ve been wanting to make magic shell for a while, and all the recipes had coconut oil (which I can’t find in the grocery stores), and I thought that was all that worked! I will definitely be making this soon!

  22. Annie @ Annie's Noms

Oh how I love this stuff!!! It can get expensive keep buying it though! Thank you so much for sharing, I didn’t realise it was so easy! 😀

  23. Caley

Wow, this is so cool! I guess I probably could have done a google search to find out how to do this, but I appreciate your lovely pictures anyway. 🙂 I want to try this with white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, the specialty maple chips that are hard to find…. Thanks! 🙂
