What You’ll Need

  • devils food cake mix– Check your grocery stores baking isle for a variety of cake mixes. I’ve found that the devils food cake mix works perfect for this cake.
  • canola oil or vegetable oil- Canola oil is a staple ingredient in most cake mixes. Keeps the cake soft and moist.
  • milk– A higher fat milk works best for the cake recipe. 2% or whole  milk. You can also use half and half or heavy cream.
  • sour cream– Sour cream might seem like an usual ingredient for cake, but it actually helps keep the cake soft and moist.
  • large eggs– In general, I use large eggs for all of my baking. Helps keep things consistent.
  • instant chocolate pudding mix– In your grocery stores baking section, pick up a box of instant chocolate pudding mix. Make sure it says instant. Gives the cake an extra chocolatey flavor and denseness.
  • hershey’s chocolate sauce- A couple squeezes of chocolate sauce gives another layer of chocolate flavor to the cake. Find it in the baking section or near the hot chocolate.
  • mini chocolate chips– I enjoy the mini chocolate chips in this cake recipe. Little bites of chocolate pieces.
  • Ghirardelli chocolate melts– The chocolate melts are used to drizzle over top of the cake before serving. Look for them in a bag, in the baking section of the grocery store.
  • Oreo cookies– Crushed Oreo Cookies get sprinkled over top of the cake right before serving.

How To Make Chocolate Bundt Cake

  2. Place all ingredients into a large mixing bowl, stir to combine until well combined. Transfer to bundt pan, spreading evenly.
  3. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until baked through. Remove and let cool completely before flipping over.
  4. Dust with powdered sugar and cut into slices.  Another serving option is top cake with melted chocolate then garnish with crushed Oreos as in first photo.

Where Can I Buy A Bundt Pan?

You can find bundt pans at any kitchen store, Walmart and Target in the kitchen/baking section. I always keep Amazon as a back up if I can’t find at my local stores.

How Can I Prevent My Bundt Cake From Sticking To The Pan?

If you’ve ever had your bundt cake stuck in the pan, you know the horror, ha! To prevent this, make sure you generously spray your pan with cooking spray before putting the cake batter in. After removing the cake from the oven, place the pan on a wire rack and let cool; about 10-20 minutes. This allows the cake to become firm enough to remove from the pan without breaking apart. Carefully slide a plastic knife down the sides of the pan to release any sticking spots.

What Happens If My Cake Comes Out Broken?

Take a deep breath and let’s look at some options. If it’s just a few smaller pieces that stuck to the pan, you can carefully place them/patch back onto the cake and cover it all up with a nice thick drizzle of chocolate ganache. If it’s a little more broken, let’s make a trifle! Break the entire bundt cake into small pieces and layer with fruit and fresh sweet whipped cream. A trifle is a perfect option for broken cake.

Tips For Making The Best Chocolate Cake

  1. Bring butter and eggs to room temperature before you use them. If you need to soften the butter in a hurry, place it on a plate, heat a glass in hot water and cover the butter with it.
  2. Sift dry ingredients together to add air into the batter and you’ll enjoy a soft, light cake.
  3. When you’re mixing the dry ingredients, add in a small box of instant pudding, like I’ve done in this recipe. It makes for a delicious moist cake.
  4. Another way to achieve a moist cake is to drizzle a few tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk over the top after warm and baked.
  5. Cakes are delicate. Resist opening the oven door to peek while baking. It can cause your cake to fall.

Leftovers

Store any leftover cake in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Refrigerated or room temperature.

Hello, Jenny! Thank you so much for sharing this awesome recipe. But I would like to kick it up a notch by adding a coconut macaroon filling. Would the filling cook or should I make them separately and then assemble it? Thanks in advance.

What is the chocolate sauce? They no longer make the Hershey’s sauce in the can (I have checked everywhere for it and am told they no longer make it) You can buy it on line, but its supposedly very expensive. Can you just use the normal Hershey’s syrup in the bottle?
    Thanks looks so delicious.
