Homemade Magic Shell

Sauces

I have been making this simple homemade magic shell for the boys for so long that it never occurred to me to share the recipe, lol!  It’s so easy I just figured everyone knew about it.

Well, if you don’t sit back and watch how simple it is to prepare your own 2 ingredient magic shell right at home!

Start with 1 Cup chocolate chips.  I used semi-sweet.

Pour those chips into a nice heat proof bowl and microwave until melty.

They’ll look all shiny, like this :)

With a dry, clean spoon stir those chips until melted and smooth.

Pour in 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and stir stir stir.

You’ll get a shiny, smooth sauce that will soon become magic shell over your ice cream!

Break out a cute ice cream bowl with a nice scoop of ice cream inside.

Time to drizzle that sauce!

Get crazy, add as much or as little as you like.

Wait about 60 seconds and your sauce turns into hardened chocolate, woohoo!

Homemade Magic Shell

Homemade Magic Shell 5 textIngredients

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Directions

  1. Place chocolate in heat proof bowl and microwave until melted, about 60-75 seconds depending on your microwave. Stir until creamy then drizzle in vegetable oil until well combined, shiny and smooth. Drizzle over ice cream, wait about 60 seconds for sauce to harden and enjoy your homemade magic shell. Place leftover sauce in airtight container and keep room temperature for 2 days. Microwave for 30 seconds before using again.

Makes 1 cup Magic Shell Sauce

*Some people use Coconut oil from what I’ve been told that works great too*

Thanks for posting this recipe! I’ve been wanting to make magic shell for a while, and all the recipes had coconut oil (which I can’t find in the grocery stores), and I thought that was all that worked! I will definitely be making this soon!

I use this recipe at Christmastime to make chocolate-peanut brittle. Once you have stirred your oil in, add 1-2 cups peanuts and stir, then spread onto a cookie sheet covered in wax paper. Refrigerate until firm, then break apart. Yummmm. Love your blog!

THAT is genius!! I’ve had to resort to throwing vanilla ice cream in the blender with Ovaltine to “chocolatize” it since my boys won’t eat plain vanilla ice cream. Since I ALWAYS have the big ole’ Costco bag of choc chips on hand this will be a HIT with them :)

  29. 29

Oh Oh Oh! I feel like the kid who finally knows the answer to the big question! This is so cool! Can’t wait to try this..and with peanut butter chips too! Thanks for the fun recipe. :)

I like that this uses veggie oil. I have done it with coconut oil before, and you get a very coconut flavor. Not that, that is bad, but when you want chocolate you want chocolate!
