Chocolate Peanut Butter Sandwiches from Disneyland

Tags: , , ,

I am without a doubt a chocolate and peanut butter fanatic.  When I first devoured this treat from Disneyland a few months ago, I knew I had to go home and make my own version.  It is too good to only enjoy at Disney 🙂

To celebrate the first official day off of school, the boys and I celebrated at Disneyland earlier this week…one of our favorite places ever!

Here are some photos of our day (then the recipe at the end)…most of these photos are from Instagram on my Iphone.  Do you guys use this app on the Iphone?  I am in LOVE with it and use it seriously all the time!  Find me, I am under “pickypalate”…shocker, lol!

Love you Disneyland!

Love Main Street and boy it’s busy during the summer.

My little stinkers 🙂  If they wanted a treat later, they knew they had to let Mommy take some pics.  Haha.

Love the Penny Arcade.

We started on the Buzz Lightyear ride, the line usually goes pretty quick 🙂

Then we popped over to California Adventure.

We went on Soarin’ Over California which is my favorite ride. I could ride it all day!

Passed by this cute boy band, lol 🙂

Went on the new Little Mermaid ride. No joke, this line went on forever and after the ride was over, both my boys said…..that was lame! It definitely is better for girls…I loved it 🙂

Headed back to Disneyland to get some lunch, love the castle!!

Enjoyed some grub at the Golden Horseshoe.

Got a kick out of the silly hillbilly show 🙂

A nice girl took this photo of the boys and I getting ready to enjoy our bakery stop!!

Ahhh, Pooh Bakery in the corner of the park by Splash Mountain. It’s a must try if you are going to Disney!

The beloved Chocolate Peanut Butter Sandwich from Disneyland….let’s see how my homemade version compares….scroll down.

I was very happy with my homemade version!  You can’t tell very well in the “Disneyland” version, but there is a thin layer of chocolate between the peanut butter and graham cracker.  Mmmm 🙂

Chocolate Peanut Butter Sandwich…Picky Palate’s Version

  • 3 cups good quality chopped milk chocolate
  • 4 tablespoons shortening
  • 12 halved graham crackers
  • 2 cups creamy peanut butter

  1. Melt chocolate and shortening over a double boiler, stirring to melt.  I use a small saucepan, boil water, reduce heat to low and place a heat proof bowl over the saucepan then add my chocolate, stirring until melted.
  2. Dip each graham cracker into chocolate and let set up on wax or parchment paper.  Stick in the freezer for a few minutes to speed this up.  Spread 2 tablespoons (or a cookie scoopful) of peanut butter over the top of each dipped graham cracker then place in the freezer for 10 more minutes.  This step is important.   While the peanut butter is freezing, remove chocolate from heat and stir, so it cools slightly and thickens up a touch. Slowly and carefully spoon melted chocolate over tops and sides of peanut butter.  This is where the patience and work comes in.  Use a small spoon working the chocolate around the edges and sides.  You’ll then use a little plastic knife to run the chocolate around the edges and clean it up a little.  Let set up, (stick back in the freezer for another 10 minutes) then with a spoon, drizzle chocolate over top to get the “lines” you see in the pictures above.  (If your chocolate is too thick at this point, set it back over the double boiler so it melts a little bit).
  3. My reviews…Definitely keep these chilled just like Disneyland does, they melt rather quickly once your fingers get on them.  It was tricky to get mine to look quite as pretty as the Disneyland ones, but with a little patience you can do it!  Have fun and keep them chilled!

Makes 12 sandwiches

Have a great rest of your week, come back soon!

They look delicious. I would recommend using chocolate covered graham crackers. It would get rid of the first two steps of your recipe.I’m definetely going to try these. Thank you

I made these this past weekend for an over-nighter with my girl friends. I quartered the grahams (since I was making a bunch of mini desserts) and mixed in a little powdered sugar with the peanut butter. Though they took time to make (I obediently did all the freezing and was glad I did), it was much easier than I expected. And of the six desserts I made, THIS is the one everyone was talking about. I will make these again and again. Thanks so much for the recipe!

It’s crazy but I just had one of these Peanut Butter sandwich treats for the very first time last week. I found be at it’s very best at room temperature, and not right out of the cool case they are kept in at the Parks. I like your recipe and will give it a try soon. But I’m sure it wont be as pretty as yours or Disney’s, Thanks for the ideas.

These look delish! I can’t wait to try them. I will try it with Guittard’s Chocolate Melt and Molds. This is already tempered chocolate and won’t melt as quickly in your hands. I use it for my truffles and peppermint bark. Good stuff.

Hey, as a long time candy maker, I thought I’d share a tip with you. Instead of using shortening, use 1/2 a bar of paraffin wax. It will make the chocolate spread easier, keep it from melting and add some sheen.

Don’t get freaked-out, there’s wax in most chocolate covered candy that you buy.

    Jessie says:

So… I’m currently in the process of making these, but me being me… I’m making it crazy complicated.
The ones that are currently in the making have a layer of vanilla ice cream after the peanut butter. I hope they come out as amazing as yours look!!!

OMG. I loved your photos of Disneyland, i would like to visit one day for sure!! And that chocolate peanut butter slice… I’m in New Zealand and i would like to try to make the slice but what are the crackers?? What texture are they.. Are they salty.. And is the peanut butter smooth or crunchy.. And when your recipe says shortening is that like a product called Kremelta? (Would u use it to make chocolate rice bubble crackles for a child’s birthday party?) I’m new to pin interest so I hope I receive your answer…. Thanks Donna

This look wonderful! I might try using Keebler Chocolate Covered Grahams to make these even quicker. I don’t think differences in chocolae should make too much difference.

What type of chocolate did you use? Mine melted but was way too thick, even with extra shortening/butter.
Tasted ok, but was too thick to work with.

    Aimee says:

what if you dipped them in the chocolate? wouldnt that be easier and get a uniform edge? maybe half at a time for less mess.
or dip bottom -dry, then top and sides. adding some coconut and powdered sugar to the peanut butter and mixing would make it able to be handled so this would make it really simple for uniform dipping. i make “peanut butter balls” just with those ingredients and can roll into balls with no mess or sticking. then i roll in cereal or nuts or dried fruit, chocolate chips, graham cracker crust.
    what do you think?
    these look delicious
    take care

    Danielle says:

I made these and they were a hit! They are a little time consuming and it is quite unfortunate that this recipe only makes 12. Because they run out too quickly! My fiancé and kids will not stop asking me to make more! I used jiff pb and nestle choc which worked fine but I may try to put powdered sugar to thicken the pb like a previous commenter said. Seems like u have to freeze the pb long and it still got gooey when I started putting the chocolate on top. Anyhoo, Thanks for this recipe!

I think I have a solution for the tedious part of putting the chocolate around the sides…I’m a chef and specialize in cakes. I think you can use a plastic disposable decorating bag, fill it with the melted chocolate, then pipe the chocolate around the edges. This would be a lot faster. They sell a decorating tip (real cheap) which I believe is Tip #48, that has a flat opening, which I think would work perfect for this. Another plus is that the warmth from your hand (while holding the decorating bag) will keep the chocolate soft. You can find the bags and tip at any cake decorating or bakers supply store. Craft stores like Michaels, Hobby Lobby and such, also carry cake decorating supplies. I hope this helps. And thank you for the recipe. My two sons are chocolate-peanut butter addicts! So I’ll definitely be making these real soon.

OMG! No, seriously! I’ve actually never been to Disney but chocolate covered graham crackers are ridiculously good and I’ve never even seen a version with peanut butter. I LOVE peanut butter! If I went to Disney and saw these I’d come home a whole dress size bigger! So now I’m torn between pinning this recipe and throwing it away and pretending I never saw it. 🙂
