What You’ll Need
Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make beef tacos at home. See the recipe card located at the bottom of the post for full details.
- Olive Oil– Extra Virgin Olive Oil is used to saute the onions and ground beef.
- White Onion– I like to use white onion for the recipe.
- Garlic– Garlic is added to the onion for flavor before the ground beef is added to the skillet.
- Ground Beef– Use a lean ground beef for the recipe, 80% lean or higher.
- Salt– I use kosher salt for my cooking and baking.
- Pepper– For best tasting results, use freshly cracked black pepper.
- Salsa Verde Salsa– Use your favorite prepared salsa verde. We like Herdez.
- Ground Cumin- Ground cumin is added for flavor to the taco meat.
How to Make Ground Beef Tacos
Heat Olive Oil. Place olive oil into medium skillet or pot over medium heat.
Cook Onions and Garlic. Saute onions and garlic until softened, about 5 minutes. Add ground beef.
Season Beef. Add salt and pepper to the ground beef, stirring until browned.
Salsa and Cumin. Add salsa verde and cumin, stirring until combined. Reduce heat to low until ready to serve.
Add Taco Meat To Slow Cooker If Desired. You can place the beef mixture into a slow cooker and cook on low for 3-6 hours if desired.
Recipe Tips For Success
- Use Taco Meat Other Ways. Instead of tacos, try the taco meat over nachos, inside burritos, over rice and even more. It’s so versatile.
- Prepare Ahead. Make your taco meat a day in advance to save time for taco night.
- Use Lean Ground Beef. To avoid lots of fat in the beef, use an 80% or higher ground beef.
How To Serve
Serve ground beef tacos for your upcoming taco night. Serve by themselves or with a side of chips and salsa. We also like to have our tacos with our simple Mexican Rice Recipe.
Leftovers
To heat up leftovers, place taco meat in a heat proof bowl, loosely covered in the microwave. Heat for 60-90 seconds, or until hot. Serve in tortillas or however you’d like to enjoy it.

How much garlic?
I was wondering the same. I looked over comments though and one lady said she used two cloves. Sounds about right to me.
Jill & Amanda, sorry about missing that. 🙂 2 tablespoons of garlic is what I used. You can also use 2 cloves as that worked for Lynne.
I think I just found tonight’s dinner!
How much garlic? Recipe doesn’t say.
I couldn’t find thick soft tortillas at Trader Joe’s. I’ll have to check Sprouts.
Just found you recently. Glad to know I’m not the only one that likes tacos weekly..
Jenny, I made these and they were delicious! I used 2 small garlic cloves – you didn’t mention how much garlic to use, so I guessed. Everyone loved it!
I love how simple these are!
Looks so good! How much garlic did you use?
Sometimes simple is best!
Love the simplicity of these tacos! So tasty 🙂 Might even make a good tostada similar to this 🙂
I love this Herdez salsa – we use it on everything! I have a similar slow cooker recipe that uses chicken and I wouldn’t have thought to try beef instead. Thanks for the recipe!
I made these last night! Very easy to make, I added a jalapeno while I was cooking the onion and garlic (I LOVE spicy food!!) I was a little nervous that they were going to be bland, without having a taco seasoning packet added, but they weren’t!! They were very light and sooo good! My hubby said he likes these better than when we do use the packet (which is just pure salt!!!) I will def. be making these again!!
Love to hear it Stephanie, thanks so much for sharing!
Is salsa verde spicy or mild?

I was wondering the same thing. My kids will not touch it if it is spicy. Thanks.
