What You’ll Need

Are you ready to make the best homemade pizza dough ever? Here is what you will need to get started:

  • warm water (110 degrees F.)- You’ll use the warm water to activate the yeast.
  • Active Dry Yeast– Active dry yeast is used in making homemade breads and pizza dough. Find it in the baking isle of the grocery store.
  • granulated sugar– This fine sugar gives just a little sweetness to the pizza crust. Not much.
  • all-purpose flour– Flour is the main dry ingredient in the pizza crust.
  • extra virgin olive oil– Extra virgin olive oil is added to the dough recipe. Gives a nice flavor.
  • kosher salt– Kosher salt is a course salt is commonly used in cooking and baking. I prefer it over table salt.
  • garlic salt– Lawry’s is my favorite brand of garlic salt if you can find it.

How To Make Pizza with Homemade Dough

  1. Proof the yeast. Place warm water, yeast and sugar into bowl of a stand mixer with dough hook attachment attached. Mix gently then let sit until doubled in size, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add remaining dough ingredients. With mixer on low, add flour, olive oil, salt and garlic salt.
  3. Knead the dough. Scrape sides of bowl and let mixer knead dough for 5 minutes. Dough should have the sides of the bowl cleaned. Add sprinkles of flour or water if needed to get the bowl cleaned while kneading.
  4. Shape into a ball. After 5 minutes of kneading, remove dough from mixing bowl with floured hands (put a small amount of flour in your hands and rub together), and transfer to a floured countertop. Fold dough over itself a couple times then form into a round ball. From here, you can use the dough to make pizza and calzones.
  5. Assemble your pizza. When ready, place dough onto a pizza pan, pressing to a 12 inch round, or larger for a more thin crust. Spoon pizza sauce of your choice over dough leaving a 1 inch border around edges. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese and toppings of your choice.
  6. Bake the pizza. Bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees F. for 15 minutes, until crust is cooked through. Remove and let cool for 5 minutes before slicing.

Tips For Success

This pizza dough recipe is incredibly easy, but it never hurts to have a few tips in your back pocket! Here is my advice to make sure you make the absolute best dough for your pizza:

  1. Make sure your water is warm enough before starting recipe. It should be 110 degrees F. Mine is often times even warmer and the recipe works great too. Test it with your finger and it would be too hot for a baby bottle, then it is too hot for the yeast!
  2. Check expiration date of your Active Dry Yeast. Usually shelf life is about 1 year. You don’t want to use an expired yeast as it won’t work as well.
  3. Flour your hands before handling the dough when it’s done. It makes your life so much easier, no sticking 🙂

How To Serve

Pizza can be it’s own main dish or try serving with my Cheesy Pizza Bread as a side for dipping into some warmed marinara sauce or Ranch Dressing.

Storing Leftovers

Store any leftover pizza slices in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the refrigerator. Reheat on a heat proof plate covered in the microwave for 45-60 seconds or until hot. I like to also reheat my pizza leftovers in an air fryer at 400 degrees F. for 4-5 minutes until hot. This gives you a nice crispy crust.

You Can Also Make Calzones with this Pizza Dough!

Use this pizza dough recipe to make Calzones with your favorite pizza sauce toppings inside.

  • Roll out the pizza dough like you would to make a round pizza, but put toppings and sauce over just one half leaving 1 inch border where you are filling.
  • Carefully fold crust over filled side and take the tines of a fork to press firmly around edges. I dip my fork in olive oil to prevent sticking.
  • Brush top of calzone with olive oil, sprinkle with Parmesan Cheese and a sprinkle of Garlic Salt.
  • Bake at 400 degrees F. for 15 minutes.
  • Remove and cut into slices.

That’s it! Bet you didn’t realize that making pizza dough also meant you could make calzones in your own kitchen. 🙂

I’ve been wanting to make my own pizza dough for years but was too intimidated to attempt it. The other night I tried a couple different recipes and this one was the best. Great tasting! I substituted garlic powder for the garlic salt. Taste was great! Definitely pinning this and making it again soon!

Needed a quick dough recipe for pizza tonight. Found this one and it’s 100% a winner. I did let dough rise for 15 minutes. The family ate the entire pizza in 10 minutes.

This recipe is one of the easiest by far! It was simple to make and the dough is so soft and yum! I doubled the recipe and had enough dough for 4 individual pizzas- in one bowl!

This recipe is being shared with my adult kids! Thanks again!

I didn’t know that kneading dough only took 5 minutes. For some reason I thought the process took hours. I’ll have to go to a restaurant where they make the pizza in front of you.

I agree. I have made 4x’s of this recipe and store it in freezer until I need another. Defrost in refrigerator for best results.

I am a cooking novice to the max. I had this crazy idea to make homemade pizzas and I would make the dough. Just put it in the oven and it looks and smells like pizza … so I consider that a win! Thanks for all of the great instructions (down to the flouring of the hands)!!

I had to let my yeast proof for about 15 minutes because it was a little old but it still worked. I find it hard to get good pizza dough when you don’t let it rise for hours, it’s usually more like bread, but this one was really light and delicious. Very easy with the mixer too! Kids enjoyed it and had fun making it with me too.

Love, love, LOVE this recipe! We make this once a week and it always comes out perfectly. I add 1/2 tsp of basil for a little zing and we use it in our deep dish pan – so good! Thank you!!

Really good recipe and easy to put together. I like the fact that it doesn’t have a rise time. Perfet thickness for us….made on a pan slightly larger than 12″ and has the little holes in it. I’ll make again!

Can you explain the between instant yeast and active dry yeast? Thanks for sharing your recipe, it looks fabulous…

Hi Ryann, I’ve only made the recipe using this stand mixer and dough hook method since it needs to be needed for a good amount of time.

I love the fact that most of your recipes have Nutrition information. My granddaughter has Type 1 Diabetes and this information helps me count her carbs when I make your recipes. She loves pizza!! Great recipe.

I remember my mom making pizza dough when I was young, and it was a whole day affair. Needless to say, I never had the time foe that. My husband wanted pizza during the cold weather snap that stranded us inside our cabin for almost a week. I used your recipe and WOW! So easy and turned out perfect. I made the dough and put it into the ziploc bag for about 5 hours, pulled it out for 20 minutes and proceeded.

This is on my go-to list forever.

This was a super easy, quick and delicious recipe! I made 1.5X the recipe and it made 4 generous personal size pizzas (I have hungry teenagers). I also swapped out the garlic salt for Italian seasoning and it got rave reviews from the family (plus it made the kitchen smell delicious!). I’ll definitely be using this recipe for all of our make-your-own pizza nights!

This recipe was amazing! I was searching for a new pizza dough recipe because all of my past attempts have turned out more like bread than pizza. This one was PERFECT. Easy to spread out if you want a thinner crust like I did! I cooked it on parchment paper in the oven and it crisped up really nicely. Thank you for this recipe!! A new favorite!! 🙂

We made this a few weeks ago, ended up making two pizzas for our fam of 4! Came back today to find the recipe because it was kid and hubby approved! Love the ease for a weeknight (new COVID reality that I would attempt pizza on a weeknight!). Bookmarking and will pin as well. Thank you!

how do you store the pizza dough; like if I wanted to make just one small pizza and then make another one later?

    1. Jenny

      Hi Amanda,
Place the dough you’re saving in a ziplock bag until you’re ready to use it. You could keep it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Let it come to room temperature before rolling out, it will be much easier to roll 🙂

    1. Jenny

Instant yeast is fine and you don’t have to let this recipe rise 🙂 Let me know if you have any other questions.
