What You’ll Need

Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make chocolate krispie treats at home. See the recipe card located at the bottom of the post for full details.

  • Rice Krispie Cereal– For best results use Kelloggs brand cereal. It’s the crispiest and best tasting.
  • Mini Marshmallows– Find mini marshmallows in the baking section of the grocery store.
  • Butter– I use salted butter for my cooking and baking. Unsalted works just fine too.
  • Chocolate Chips– Use your favorite variety of chocolate chips. Milk, or semi-sweet are best.
  • Toffee Chips– Some grocery stores will sell toffee chips near the chocolate chips. If you can’t find them, you can crush some Heath Bars for the same result.
  • Chocolate Sauce– I use Hershey chocolate sauce for my recipe.

How To Make Rice Krispie Treats

Melt Marshmallows. Place marshmallows and butter into a large heat proof bowl. Microwave until melted and puffed up, about 1 minute 30 seconds (will be different in all microwaves, watch through the glass.)

Tips For Toffee Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats

  • Have all of your ingredients measured out in advance.
  • Grease your mixing spoon so ingredients don’t stick while stirring. This is a lifesaver.
  • Once your marshmallows have been combined with the cereal mixture, work quick to transfer to baking sheet. When marshmallows set up, it gets more difficult to stir and transfer.

I like this idea. the one thing i’m thinking is that prepared choc chips and toffee chips are waaaay too sweet for my palate, worsened by the marshmallows. But i really like the concept of adding the toffee and deep choc flavors to the unbeatable crispy texture of brown rice crisp cereal. SO, I think I’m gonna change it by using chopped dark choc, cocoa nibs(even less sweet, right?) and lyle’s syrup. Then, i’m wondering if I make that ‘new chocolate’ A&M featured a while ago, where you bake white choc at very low temp to get it to become the product called ‘dulce white chocolate’; if i make that and chop it, will it behave well in these bars? (The toffee chips don’t really melt, right?) And for sure i’ll add pecans for nut texture, all to that glorious comforting coffee flavor!. So what do you think, leith? Ya got me wicked psyched!!
