What You’ll Need
Here are the ingredients you need to make this simple queso recipe. See the recipe card located at the bottom of the post for full instructions.
- Ricos Gourmet Nacho Cheese Sauce– Check Walmart for this brand of nacho cheese. You can also use 3 blocks of Velveeta Cheese as a substitute.

How To Make Queso Dip Recipe
Pour Cheese Into Warm Crock Pot. Place cheese sauce into crockpot set to medium or low setting.
Can I Use Velveeta Cheese As A Substitute?
Yes, you can use three blocks of Velveeta Cheese, cut into cubes, added to the crock pot in place of the nacho cheese sauce. You’ll want to stir often to melt the cheese.
Add Salsa To Crock Pot. Stir in salsa.
Cook Sausage. Brown sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir until browned.
Add Cooked Sausage To Cheese. Stir into crockpot and close lid.
Simmer. Let cook in crockpot until hot, anywhere from 2-6 hours. Stir often. Serve queso dip with your favorite tortilla chips.
Where Can I Find This Nacho Cheese Sauce?
I found the Rico’s brand nacho cheese sauce at Walmart. Check online if you’re having trouble finding it. Amazon is always a good resource.
Add your favorite prepared salsa to the cheese sauce and give a good stir.
What Is Queso?
Queso means “cheese” in Spanish, but it’s known as a cheese based dipping sauce for tortilla chips. It’s great served at parties.
Recipe Tips For Success
- Salsa Options. Use your favorite salsa for the queso. You can choose hot or mild according to your guests taste.
- Make Sausage Ahead. Brown sausage the day before for an even quicker option when making queso. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, until ready to make queso.
- Stir Queso Often. When simmering queso, make sure to stir it often. This will prevent the film on top that sets if left too long.
Recipe Variations
- More Vegetables. Add other sauteed vegetables such as onion, garlic and peppers to the queso if desired.
- Meat Substitutions. You can substitute the ground sausage for cooked shredded chicken, cooked ground beef and/or cooked shredded beef too.
- Add Hot Sauces. Try adding other hot sauces to the queso for additional heat. We use Cholula and Tobasco for more heat.
How To Serve?
Serve cheese dip with your favorite tortilla chips or artisan bread cubes at your upcoming parties. It’s also great poured over nachos and inside burritos and tacos. Always a popular appetizer among family and friends.
Can I Save Leftovers?
Yes, save any leftovers that have been cooled, in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. To reheat the queso, place into a heat proof bowl, loosely covered and microwave for 70-90 seconds, until hot. You can also place the leftover queso into a saucpan on the stovetop over medium low heat. Stir often until hot.
