What You’ll Need
Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this easy apple pie recipe. See the recipe card located at the bottom of the post for full details and instructions.
- Butter– I generally use salted butter in my recipes, unsalted works just fine too.
- Sliced Apples– Green Granny Smith Apples are what I prefer for the recipe.
- Ground Cinnamon– Cinnamon pairs so nicely with the apples, the perfect spice.
- Light Brown Sugar– Make sure your brown sugar is fresh and soft. It should be packed in the cup.
- Pillsbury Biscuit Dough– Find refrigerated biscuit dough in the dairy section of the grocery store.
- Egg Yolks– Use a bowl to pour whites of the egg and just keep the yolks.
- Salted Caramel Sauce– Trader Joe’s has a good salted caramel sauce. Any of your favorite will be fine.
- Powdered Sugar– Also called confectioners sugar, this sugar helps make the icing.
- Heavy Cream– Use heavy cream to make the icing with the powdered sugar.
Best Apples For Apple Pie
- Granny Smith– Granny Smith apples are one of the most versatile apples you can buy. Their sweet-tart flavor and crisp texture make them an apple that is as wonderful for cooking and baking as it is to eat out of hand.
- Honeycrisp– Honeycrisp apples have a sweet, subtly tangy flavor well suited for fresh and cooked preparations. Raw Honeycrisp apples are popularly consumed straight, out of hand, mainly served chilled, and are valued for their snappy, juicy flesh.
- Golden Delicious– Golden Delicious Apples are popular, medium-sized apples with a crisp firm texture and juicy sweet flavor. These tasty apples have a creamy-white interior and a thin yellow peel with light speckles.
How To Make Easy Apple Pie Skillet
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Melt. Melt butter in 12 inch cast iron skillet over medium heat.
Add Apples, Cinnamon and Sugar. Once melted add apples, cinnamon and brown sugar. Stir to combine and let cook for 5 minutes.
Cut Biscuits. Cut each biscuit round into 8 pieces (I keep cutting in half until I get 8 triangles). Place biscuit pieces into pan and gently stir into apple mixture. place half and half, egg yolk, brown sugar and cinnamon into a medium measuring cup, whisking to combine. Drizzle over biscuit mixture. Use a spoon to press biscuits into cream mixture evenly.
Bake for 30 minutes, until set. Remove and drizzle with salted caramel sauce.
Prepare Icing. Place powdered sugar into a small mixing bowl and whisk with cream until creamy and drizzling consistency. Drizzle over top of caramel layer. Serve warm.
…..and my favorite part of the recipe. Drizzle time!
Recipe Tips For Success
- Fresh Apples. Use your favorite variety of fresh apples for the recipe. Don’t use apple pie mix.
- Drizzle Icing When Warm. For gooey bites, drizzle icing while biscuits are warm out of the oven.
- Best Enjoyed While Warm. Enjoy this recipe shortly after it comes out of the oven.
- Ice Cream. Try even topping this dish with vanilla ice cream. Takes it to another delicious level.
How To Serve
Serve this easy apple pie recipe warm in individual bowls. It’s great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top too. Serve this gorgeous skillet recipe for Sunday dinner and really anytime you feel like Fall Baking.

Could you make this with Pillsbury cinnamon rolls instead of the buttermilk biscuits?
Yes! Would also be fantastic.
Can I make without the egg, maybe sub applesause?
Hi Tracy, I haven’t tried that substitution, can’t say for sure.
This. Is. Awesome!

Hello! Made this recipe this evening with SmartBalance spread instead of butter — and the eggs set, though it looked like the half & half curdled. Any thoughts? Too much heat? Or was it the oil in the SmartBalance that might have caused it to curdle?
It was still tasty, just not as aesthetically pleasing.
Also — any thoughts on the biscuit pieces clumping together? Or just put a few in at a time?
David same thing happened to me tonight ๐
Did you get any reply on how this could be prevented next time? I would sure love to know ๐
OMG these look divine! I have always enjoyed making monkey bread like this, but the caramel and apples are a whole new level! Your little guy is adorable too!
What changes are necessary to prepare this recipe in a 14in skillet?
This really looks awesome!
Thanks,
Pat
